Winemaker's Notes

2014 Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir is a special limited release of the Winemaker's favorite barrels of the vintage. Intensely aromatic, complex pleasure pinot made from vines of 14 to 40 years old, grown in Tyee's Estate Vineyard on the Buchanan Family Century Farm.

Tyee Estate Vineyard

Tyee Wine Cellars is located on our Family Farm founded over 130 years ago in the heart of Oregon's Willamette Valley. The first vines were planted in Tyee Estate Vineyard in 1974, with subsequent plantings throughout the 1980s. These vines of Pommard Pinot noir are Tyee's self-rooted old vines. In 2000, we added Dijon clones 115, 777 and Pommard Pinot noir on resistant rootstock. Five family generations have revered the farm's open spaces, woodlands, wetlands and streams while growing crops in a sustainable manner.

2014 Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir

Rated one of the “Best Pinots in Oregon”

Floral, spice and forest aromas, including cedar, herbs, rose, Red Vine candy, pine sap and fresh-turned soil mixes with cherry, herbaceous and Indian spiced flavors on the palate. The more you get to know it, the more you’ll love it

2014 Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir

90 points (Reviewed December 2017)

Deep red. Musky cherry pit and red currant scents along with subtle floral and herb overtones.  Gently sweet and focused on the plate, offering nicely concentrated red fruit and spicecake flavors that firm up slowly on the back half.  Dusty tannins come in slowly on the finish, which leaves a hint of bitter chocolate behind.  Drinking window: 2020 - 2025

A winemaker’s barrel selection. ·Moderate garnet color in the glass. More brooding, with slowly emerging aromas of darker red cherries and berries, earthy flora and rose petal. More sap, more tannic backbone, more finish and more age worthy than the regular Estate bottling. Black cherry fruit driven with compliments of spice, savory herbs and seasoned. Needs more time to reach full potential.

2012 Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir

92 Points - March 2015 Neal Martin

"Tyee 2012 Pinot Noir Estate Barrel Select comes from 30-year-old vines (and over). It has a vibrant bouquet with dark cherries mixed with bilberry and briary, the palate is medium-bodied with fine, lithe tannins and plenty of pure dark cherry, redcurrant and raspberry fruit that is very persistent. This is another sophisticated, very thoughtfully crafted wine from winemaker Merrilee Buchanan Benson."

Fresh red berries and potpourri on the fragrant nose.  Juicy and precise, offering lively raspberry and cola flavors and a hint of candied rose.  Picks up weight with air and finishes with impressive energy, silky tannins and lingering notes of sweet red fruit and floral pastilles.

Prince of Pinot

2010 Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir, the Prince of Pinot writes,

Dreamy aromas of dark red raspberries and cherry pie glaze. Delicious array of red and black cherry and berry fruits exhibiting noticeable presence without pronounced body. Bright, clean and juicy with firm, balanced tannins that keep the fruit in line, ending with good tension on the acid-driven finish. The wine becomes silkier and livelier with air. Very good (+).

Josh Raynolds of Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar rates 2009 Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir with 90 Points for its “Vivid ruby-red. Sexy aromas of ripe raspberry, cola, Asian spices, licorice and mocha. Focused and sappy, with strong cinnamon and star anise notes adding complexity to the cherry, red berry and cola flavors. Finishes silky and long, with gentle tannins and appealing sweetness.”

Burghound

Tyee 2008 Estate Pinot Noir and Tyee 2008 Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir listed in Burghound.com's top 53 Oregon Pinot Noir Selections.

Tyee 2008 Pinot Noir – Estate: "A perfumed, airy and very pretty dark berry fruit and violet-infused nose merges seamlessly into round, supple and suave medium-bodied flavors before culminating in a clean, pure, dusty and agreeably dry finish that delivers fine depth and length."  90 Points

Tyee 2008 Pinot Noir – Estate Barrel Select: "A more deeply pitched nose offers greater complexity but at the cost of less aromatic elegance. The cool and equally pure middle weight flavors possess really lovely detail as well as a sophisticated mouth feel that terminates in a similar finish but here the ripe structure is just a bit firmer. Lovely juice."  91 Points
