Tanzer

Josh Raynolds of Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar rates 2009 Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir with 90 Points for its “Vivid ruby-red. Sexy aromas of ripe raspberry, cola, Asian spices, licorice and mocha. Focused and sappy, with strong cinnamon and star anise notes adding complexity to the cherry, red berry and cola flavors. Finishes silky and long, with gentle tannins and appealing sweetness.”

Prince of Pinot

The Prince of Pinot says about 2009 Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir, "Reserved but enticing aromas of a bowl of crushed dark red cherries, plums and berries. A very polished wine with grace and elegance, yet offering a substantial rush of sinfully delicious and perfectly ripe dark red cherries and berries that persist on the crisp and juicy finish. Combines power with finesse. Youthful, and will benefit from more time in the cellar."

Prince of Pinot

2008 Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir wins a spot in the Top 11 Oregon Pinot Noirs of 2011, All-Americans First Team from the Prince of Pinot.

"Reserved but pleasing scent of fresh cherries and raspberries with a hint of spice and rose petal.  The perfectly ripened fruit has a dark red profile, the dry tannins and crisp acidity frame the fruit beautifully, and the silky finish makes a lasting impression. A perfect argument for the superiority of old vine Pinot Noir. The wine was still great the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, but I couldn’t report beyond this as I eagerly finished the bottle. An exceptional wine that is much more approachable than many reserve Pinot Noirs from Oregon’s 2008 vintage. A vin de garde for Oregon in 2008."

Burghound

Tyee 2008 Estate Pinot Noir and Tyee 2008 Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir listed in Burghound.com's top 53 Oregon Pinot Noir Selections.

Tyee 2008 Pinot Noir – Estate: "A perfumed, airy and very pretty dark berry fruit and violet-infused nose merges seamlessly into round, supple and suave medium-bodied flavors before culminating in a clean, pure, dusty and agreeably dry finish that delivers fine depth and length."  90 Points

Tyee 2008 Pinot Noir – Estate Barrel Select: "A more deeply pitched nose offers greater complexity but at the cost of less aromatic elegance. The cool and equally pure middle weight flavors possess really lovely detail as well as a sophisticated mouth feel that terminates in a similar finish but here the ripe structure is just a bit firmer. Lovely juice."  91 Points

The Wine Advocate

"2009 Tyee Estate Pinot Noir offers up a pleasing perfume of spice box, floral notes, and assorted red fruits setting the stage for a medium-bodied, sweetly-fruited, nicely balanced wine that offers excellent value in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. "

Prince of Pinot

About 2008 Tyee Estate Pinot Noir, from the August 2011 PinotFile, "A charming wine in every way. Enticing aromas redolent of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries with a hint of vanilla cone. Lovely array of crisply flavored red and blue fruits with a hint of herbs. Nicely structured with ripe, firm tannins and bright acidity finishing dry and satisfying. Amazing value. Very Good."

Chuck Hill - Wines Northwest

2008 Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir is reviewed by Chuck Hill for his Pinot Noir with Copper River Salmon tasting.  He writes, "Second-generation Tyee winemaker Merrilee Buchanan Benson crafted this reserve-style wine from grapes harvested from the oldest vines in the estate vineyard near Corvallis, Oregon.  Finding an excellent balance between power and elegance, the wine offers aromas of cherry, strawberry and cranberry with notes of earth and hints of smoky oak.  Flavors on the palate echo the nose with added notes of baking spices and black fruits.  Excellent aging potential and a great accompaniment to salmon."

Chuck Hill with Wines Northwest recommends 2009 Tyee Estate Gewurztraminer.  He writes, "Located on the Buchanan Family's Century Farm near Corvallis, Oregon, Tyee Wine Cellars celebrated their 25th year in 2010.  Daughter Merrilee Buchanan Benson is the winemaker crafting Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir.  The 2009 Gewurztraminer shows aromas and flavors of light pear and peach with hints of vanilla and baking spice."

Prince of Pinot

Tyee 2006 Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir wins a place in the All-American PinotFile list of Value Priced Pinots.  These are the Prince of Pinots favorite wines of 2010.  He writes, "The All-Americans were selected not only for their fruity, flirty New World hedonism and description-defying sensuality, but for the emotion they illicit.  All the anointed wines were technically sound, but what separated the All-Americans was a powerful charisma."
