The Wine Advocate

"2009 Tyee Estate Pinot Noir offers up a pleasing perfume of spice box, floral notes, and assorted red fruits setting the stage for a medium-bodied, sweetly-fruited, nicely balanced wine that offers excellent value in Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. "

Prince of Pinot

About 2008 Tyee Estate Pinot Noir, from the August 2011 PinotFile, "A charming wine in every way. Enticing aromas redolent of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries with a hint of vanilla cone. Lovely array of crisply flavored red and blue fruits with a hint of herbs. Nicely structured with ripe, firm tannins and bright acidity finishing dry and satisfying. Amazing value. Very Good."

Chuck Hill - Wines Northwest

2008 Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir is reviewed by Chuck Hill for his Pinot Noir with Copper River Salmon tasting.  He writes, "Second-generation Tyee winemaker Merrilee Buchanan Benson crafted this reserve-style wine from grapes harvested from the oldest vines in the estate vineyard near Corvallis, Oregon.  Finding an excellent balance between power and elegance, the wine offers aromas of cherry, strawberry and cranberry with notes of earth and hints of smoky oak.  Flavors on the palate echo the nose with added notes of baking spices and black fruits.  Excellent aging potential and a great accompaniment to salmon."

Wines Northwest

Chuck Hill with Wines Northwest recommends 2009 Tyee Estate Gewurztraminer.  He writes, "Located on the Buchanan Family's Century Farm near Corvallis, Oregon, Tyee Wine Cellars celebrated their 25th year in 2010.  Daughter Merrilee Buchanan Benson is the winemaker crafting Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir.  The 2009 Gewurztraminer shows aromas and flavors of light pear and peach with hints of vanilla and baking spice."

Prince of Pinot

Tyee 2006 Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir wins a place in the All-American PinotFile list of Value Priced Pinots.  These are the Prince of Pinots favorite wines of 2010.  He writes, "The All-Americans were selected not only for their fruity, flirty New World hedonism and description-defying sensuality, but for the emotion they illicit.  All the anointed wines were technically sound, but what separated the All-Americans was a powerful charisma."

Burghound

About Tyee Estate Barrel Select Pinot Noir 2007, Allen Meadows of Burghound writes; "A cool, perfumed and very pinot nose of red berry fruit and subtle earth notes leads to lighter but delicious flavors that possess good balance and reasonably good depth in a dusty, precise and lingering finish.  Like many Oregon '07s, this is not especially concentrated but the balance is solid and this is an altogether enjoyable wine, particularly for its price."

Travel and Leisure Magazine

Tyee Wine Cellars featured in Travel and Leisure Magazine October 2011 Willamette Valley's Boutique Vineyards by Bruce Schoenfeld

"One afternoon I drove to see Merrilee Buchanan Benson at Tyee Wine Cellars, an under-the-radar property founded by her parents, who first planted grapes in the valley back in 1974. We sat under 400-year-old oaks, ate a picnic lunch, and drank a 1999 Pinot Noir. It was salmon-colored, typical of light-bodied Pinots with some age, and unobtrusive. Yet each time I took a sip, it had gained richness and body and character, as great Burgundies characteristically do. I know people who’d fly across the Atlantic to taste just such a wine, but they overlook the Willamette because bottles like that one never reach their doorstep. And besides wine professionals, the only person I know who has ever visited Tyee, a good 20 minutes from the bulk of the valley’s wineries, is ... me.

Now 37, Buchanan Benson became the winemaker in 2006, after two decades of modest success for Tyee. She’d studied enology and had her own ideas, so she stopped using oak for the Chardonnay to help the fruit shine through, and started harvesting Pinot Noir in three passes to make sure all the berries were ripe. She cut production nearly in half because she didn’t want any grapes that weren’t grown on her family’s property. “I come from this farm,” she said, “and I’m excited about having people experience it.”

Wines Northwest

Chuck Hill with Wines Northwest recommends Tyee Estate 2006 Barrel Select Pinot Noir as part of his Pinot Noir with Copper River Salmon Tasting.  He writes, "Winemaker Merrilee Buchanan Benson crafted this attractive wine from a blend of Pommard and Dijon 115 clone fruit grown at the winery near Corvallis, OR.  Oak aging in 30% new barrels gives the wine some backbone, as it shows medium-bodied character with aromas and flavors of black cherry, berries, baking spice and smoky cranberry.  It is very food friendly and a good value for a complex Oregon Pinot Noir."

About Tyee's Nature Trail, "There's much to be said for a place that stands still in time yet can be freely navigated. Tyee Cellars and the Buchanan Century Farm have adapted to the last two generation's love for local wine without losing hold of the pastoral context that brought them to today." - Mark Stock
